Color me

I mostly wear black.  I mostly decorate in browns.  Thankfully baby stuff comes in color!  And in the spring I am always swept away and in love with vibrant colors.  I bought some tulips, my orchid was in full bloom, the flowers in the yard looked gorgeous and I found myself running around this weekend taking pictures of everything Spring.

Orange adventure

As you know, I love pumpkins. The more unique the better.  So over the weekend, when we had some unexpected free time, we decided to road trip it up to a pumpkin patch about 45 minutes north of Los Angeles.  And it was Max’s first pumpkin patch!

They were only open until 6pm and we arrived around 4:30pm.  Perfect timing because by that time of day, half the place was in the shade.  Plus there was probably half as many people.  I don’t know about you, but I’m just not up for big crowds.  I refuse to shop for groceries or anything on the weekends in Los Angeles.  I’d rather go on a Monday at noon.  Plus then I can grab my free coffe or food sample without waiting for some slow poke with a million questions to get out of my way!  And that’s how I like my pumpkin patch too – free of crowds.

I can’t wait until Max is old enough to pick out his own pumpkin, run around the corn maze, hit the petting zoo and beg for a train ride.  Until then, we at least snapped some photos of him having his first pumpkin patch adventure.  We had him test out a few up close.

This was my favorite pumpkin – the stem was longer than the pumpkin!

This weekend we are also hoping to hit the same pumpkin patch we went to last year – but this time with some friends!  It just depends on our work schedules on whether or not we’ll make it out.  Yup, I sure do love pumpkins.

Nursery beginnings

This was the first new addition to the nursery.  I swear Joe’s mom must have been on her computer watching me create the baby registry at Amazon becasue this glider chair arrived on my doorstep within a week as a gift from her!  She’s fast!  What a great Grandma she is, spoiling him already.

And now we have three dogs in the house with this little blue jellycat Cordy Roy Dog from my friend Kay.

Social challenge

Pixie has social issues.  Mainly, she doesn’t like to be social.  Not with other dogs especially.  I’m not surprised.  If before YOU were a one year old, you had two broken legs and mange (bad case of mites), there’s a chance there was a little trouble at home and you may be damaged goods in need of a good therapist.

After we adopted her, I thought over time of taking her out for walks where she could see and interact with other dogs and people, she would eventually overcome her fears.  So far she hasn’t.  When she so much as sees another dog from several feet away or across the street, she starts howling and screaming like a 80 year old woman who just had her wig snatched off her head!

I decided to take the next step in trying to overcome her fears.  A Puppy Social.  This doesn’t say much for me since Puppy Social takes place on Saturday nights.  That’s how exciting our weekends are right now.  But I really wanted to get her started and I’ve been told by the trainers that the best thing for her is repeated exposure to other dogs.

She did much better than I thought.  No screaming.  But, I don’t think it helped that the biggest dog there was instantly attracted to her.  She did OK for a minute, but then had a total breakdown and told him what’s what. He got the message and left her alone the rest of the night.

Pumpkin Patch

I’m not a big Halloween person, as you can tell from my post, I didn’t have much to say.  Not only did we not dress up, but we didn’t even hand out candy this year.  Bah-humbug!  Oh wait, that’s a different holiday. What is it if you aren’t into Halloween?  Boo-Shmoobug?

But I am a big autumn person.  I love this time of year.  Not only because there are pumpkins everywhere, but because I like the way the sun hits this part of the earth, the colorful leaves, the extra breezes rushing in, the rustle of leaves.  You get my point.

And it’s just not officially fall season until I’ve visited a pumpkin patch. Being in LA, most “pumpkin patches” are really just a deserted parking lot set up with a scarecrow, some pumpkins and a couple bins of hay. But, I wanted a whole field of pumpkins, so to get that true pumpkin patch, we had to do a bit of driving.

This year, we went to the Underwood Family Farms, about an hour out for us.  And it was a good one.  I would have rather gone during the week so there were less people and screaming kids, but schedules just didn’t work out for that, so we went on the weekend.

And they were selling those weird alien pumpkins!  But there was no sign up saying what kind they are so I STILL DON’T KNOW what they are called!

We ate roasted corn and caramel apples, hopped on the tractor ride, unsuccessfully ran throughthe corn maze, bought fruit and veggies at the farmers market, bought the weirdest shaped gourds we could find and the best part… lounged on the gigantic pumpkins.

And thank goodness someone brought a secuirty guard too.  This little chihuahua was on duty to be sure no one went out of their gourd.  Yeah, I know, I shouldn’t have, but I said it.
